The Sounders 2-0 win Wednesday night against the LA Galaxy was full of excitement and questions. From Montero’s first goal this season, Bryan Meredith making his debut and fans wondering why LA stars, David Beckham and Robbie Keane did not even take the time to travel.
The captains for the match were Mauro Rosales and to no surprise Landon Donovan. Most of the possession in the first half was by the Sounders. The first goal came in the 40th minute as Rosales crossed a ball to connect with Eddie Johnson who headed it in, just out of reach of Galaxy goalkeeper Gaudette. It was Johnson’s first goal at home with the Sounders. The 39,002 fans in attendance chanted “EDDIE JOHNSON” after his goal to make a fitting end to the first half.
To start the second half Brian Meredith made his debut to relieve Michael Gspurning, who had a sore hip. Sigi was very proud of his young star. After the game Sigi said about Meredith, “I think there are a lot of teams in this league he could be starting for. He is a quality goalkeeper, we have a lot of faith in him.” The second goal was 3 minutes into the second half with a brilliant shot by Fredy Montero from 35 yards out. Regarding the goal Sigi said, “Happy to see Montero get his first goal. He chose a difficult one rather than an easy one, but that’s probably a goal of the week winner, if not a candidate for sure, but I think a winner.” Former Sounder Pat Noonan also played part of the second half. Hard to tell if fans were chanting Noonan or just flat out booing him or perhaps a mixture of both.
Overall the Seattle Sounders (5-1-1) get the 3 points at home against a rival team LA Galaxy (3-4-1). Not much time to rest, the next game is Saturday May 5th at 1:30pm at Century link field against the Philadelphia Union.
