I wonder if Russell Wilson feels comfortable enough to quit running yet. After an afternoon of constant harassment which included 3 sacks and 7 additional hits, I would think it may be a while before his fight or flight mechanism returns to normal. While the national pundits hailed (minus a few, most notable Hugh Millen of KJR) Pete Carroll for his “courage” in naming Wilson as the starter before week one, they are now backtracking faster than a politician on Election Day. Wilson did not have a stellar game, 18-34 for 153 yds, 1TD, 1 interception and 1 lost fumble, nor did he have a horrid one.
I don’t think we can accurately judge his performance due to the complete lack of protection from the offensive line. Russell Okung had 3 false start penalties, before leaving the game with an injury…again. The line did not perform in a stellar fashion in run blocking either with 115 yds on 33 attempts for a paltry 3.5 avg. Of course if the Seahawks could find some receivers that could actually catch the ball consistently, that would help young Mr. Wilson as well. The pass that ended the game was a ball that could have and SHOULD have been caught. Edwards just flat didn’t do it. If that catch would have been made it would have capped a nice return for Edwards, who had 5 catches for 43 yds, but instead the Seahawks are 0-1 going into a rough stretch of games.
The penalty bug bit again with the team getting flagged 13 times for 90 yds. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the replacement refs but then again, lack of discipline is not new to a Pete Carroll coached team. Pete needs to find a way to have his team play smarter because once the penalty reputation gets cemented it’s hard to get away from. Isn’t that right, Oakland?
On Sunday the Dallas Cowboys come into town fresh off a victory over the defending champion Giants. Romo had a great game with 22 completions for 307 yards and 3 scores. The Cowboy defense beat the Giants O-line for 3 sacks and held the Giants to 82 yards rushing. It’s not shaping up to be a favorable match-up for a team that may be without their starting left tackle. However, Seattle most always plays the Cowboys tough at Centurylink/Qwest/Seahawks Stadium. The 12th man will be in an opening day frenzy pointing all of their eardrum splitting ferocity in a direct auditory assault of Tony Romo. It has helped in the past, hopefully for Russell Wilson and the Seahawks it will help again. If not, I fear that The City of Seattle and Seahawk fans everywhere will be in for a long Season.
