Cowboys at Seahawks Game Recap

The Dallas Cowboys came into Century Link field last Sunday well rested and prepared. It had been 10 days since the ‘Boys took it to the defending champion Giants, and they were ready to roll over the home town Seahawks. 60 game minutes later, they were limping and wincing with every movement having just been beat 27-7. That they lost was disappointing enough but to add to that they were physically dominated by Seattle, and 68,008 members of the 12^th man were there to witness the utter destruction of the Dallas Cowboys.

The Seahawks set the tone for their physical play on the opening kickoff forcing Felix Jones to fumble. That led to a 21 yard Steven Hauschka field goal. The Cowboys next drive went 3 and out and the punt was blocked by reserve linebacker Malcolm Smith and picked up by Jeron Johnson who walked into the end zone to give the Hawks a quick 10-0 lead. Dallas answered in the 2^nd with a nifty 95 yard drive capped by a Miles Austin 22 yard touchdown catch, and that would be the last highlight of the day for Dallas. Seattle’s ferocious defense took the game over. Every time a Dallas receiver touched the ball he knew he was going to take a vicious hit from a member of the Seattle secondary. Even sure handed Jason Witten wasn’t immune. After taking a hard hit from Safety Cam Chancellor the tight end heard footsteps the rest of the game, which contributed to his 3 drops. The defense forced 4 fumbles and had 1 interception. The sure tackling of the linebacker held the Cowboys.

Russell Wilson did exactly what was needed to earn his first professional win. He went 15-20 for 151 yards including a nice 22 yard scoring strike to Anthony McCoy. Beast Mode was on display Sunday afternoon. Lynch rushed 26 times for 122 yards and 1 score. Most of Lynch’s yards came in the second half as the Wilson led the offense on 2 drives of 88 and 90 yards. These long drives hurt any chance the Cowboys thought about getting back into the game as they had only 3 possessions in the second half until the last 36 seconds of the game.

Coach Carroll has built a defense that is big, fast and tough. The hits delivered by the Seattle defense were huge and they were nasty, but they were legal. Former Cowboy Daryl Johnston (calling the game for FOX) commented several times that the Seahawk D.B.’s were delivering the devastating hits within the frame-work of the rules. The big hits were not limited to the defense. While Russell Wilson was scrambling WR Golden Tate hit LB Sean Lee with a blind side block that de-cleated the bigger player. While the 49ers are no doubt the class of the rapidly improving NFC West, games like the one Seattle played on Sunday indicate that the Seahawks are headed in the right direction. If the defense matches the ferocity of the 12^th man Century Link Field may become a place so feared that receivers won’t talk about it in the dark. Keep an eye on these guys…they may be special.
