The deadline for non-waiver deals is tomorrow and already a few Mariners have been getting added attention. Most notably former closer Brandon League. The San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Angels, Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox and New York Mets have been mentioned as having had talks with Jack Z. A deal was reported as being very close but nobody knows where League will ultimately end up (twitter).

The Yankees could be interested in Chone Figgins (CBS) since Alex Rodriguez will miss two months with a broken hand. As we all know, Felix Hernandez is the culprit responsible for this tragedy. The Yankees would be crazy to even consider adding Figgins, and the M’s would have to eat all but the minimum if the deal were to get done. Of course if the Yanks really want him, they can have him.

Dave Cameron of Fangraphs tweeted that the Mariners are “trying hard” for San Francisco 1B/LF Brandon Belt. Belt has 480+ plate appearances for the Giants the past two seasons and although his BA is a combined .231 over that stretch, his OBP currently sits at .326. An outfield of Belt, Saunders and Wells could be pretty nice down the road.

NOTES: Other Mariners that have had their names float around the rumor mill are: Brandan Ryan, Jason Vargas, Kevin Millwood, Miguel Olivo and Felix Hernandez (yeah right).

I’ve been a huge fan of the Seahawks and Mariners since childhood. Raised in downtown Seattle just minutes from the sports heaven that was the Kingdome. I remember seeing the dust spread over the city from my apartment window when they blew it up. I swear a single tear rolled down my face as I watched. The day either team wins it all will be the day I can die a happy man. Go Hawks!
