I was going to write a pretty detailed post on Hector Noesi’s start today using both what I saw and some Pitch F/X data from today’s outing versus the Orioles against his previous big league outings. For whatever reason, I have found myself writing a lot about Hector Noesi this year. However, Noesi quickly showed that he didn’t belong on a MLB mound, getting just four outs, walking 2, striking out 1, giving up a homer, and 6 earned runs (7 in all). This is good for a 15.85 FIP and 9.41 xFIP (I think the most redeemable fact about xFIP is the fact that it stabilizes extremes, but even it was horrible).
Noesi was 95-96 MPH on his first two pitches. Of course, pitch number 3 was a Nate McClouth homer. The fastball seemed to have a little bit of run, but it was staying high, which negates a lot of the movement. He quickly dropped down to 89 MPH on what was still fastballs (but a little more of 2-seamer) and got a strikeout with it, but was really missing his spots.
When he broke out his slider (3 straight to Adam Jones), it didn’t look good. There wasn’ t much break to it, and it was staying up. He really fell in love with his slider and it got him in trouble in the first. He threw a curveball to J.J. Hardy, which I believe was his first, and he threw it right down the middle for a hard double. He was throwing batting practice with his curve and slider. After hard hit ball after hard hit ball (with a little bit of bad luck and poor defense), he was mercifully taken out by Eric Wedge.
There really isn’t much to say other than he has not improved, and he doesn’t look like a guy that should be on the Mariners in 2013 (my suggestion has always been to use him as a reliever, but he should start in Tacoma unless he shows that he has changed over the winter).
