Since hearing Eric Wedge say that he’s strongly leaning toward moving Ichiro out of the leadoff spot, I think that can only mean one thing. That he still wants to give Chone Figgins an opportunity to lead off and establish a role with this team. Chone has been a major bust after signing a 4 year $36 million dollar deal in December of 2009. But the Mariners organization are still hoping that he can perform to his potential, the potential that made him a nightmare for opposing pitchers back in his days with the rival Angels.
Figgins would bring a good veteran mix along with Ichiro, Miguel Olivo and Brendan Ryan for the group of youngsters that we have still adjusting to playing in the Majors. Dustin Ackley and Mike Carp will be back after having impressive rookie seasons. Justin Smoak will be back to 100% health, and looking to improve after an injury plagued season. Plus the addition of highly scouted hitting prospect Jesus Montero. If Figgins can perform, along with our growing bunch of young stars, I think the Mariners can shock a lot of baseball fans out there.
Here’s a look at my projected starting lineup for the Seattle Mariners in 2012.
1.) Chone Figgins 3B
2.) Ichiro RF
3.) Dustin Ackley 2B
4.) Jesus Montero DH
5.) Justin Smoak 1B
6.) Mike Carp LF
7.) Miguel Olivo C
8.) Franklin Gutierrez CF
9.) Brendan Ryan SS
