In 5-2 Tacoma loss to the Sacramento River Cats (Athletics), David Pauley made his 2012 Mariners organization debut. It was a game where Stephen Pryor (in his rehab appearance as he nears his return to the big leagues) really struggled in his inning of work, throwing more balls than strikes, but got out of
the inning without giving up any runs. Mike Carp didn’t look great at the plate, hitting several weak pop-ups as he too is still on rehab (his 2nd long rehab appearance of the year). It was a game semi-dominated by Sacramento pitcher Graham Godfrey as he got several quick outs and pitched deep into the game.
You may remember David Pauley. Pauley pitched in 58 games for the Mariners, starting 15 from 2010-2011. He was then traded to the Tigers as part of the Doug Fister (and Casper Wells) trade. Pauley flamed out there, striking out less than 5 hitters per 9 innings with an ERA of almost 6. He was released in spring training and claimed by the LA Angels. He spent time between AAA and the Majors, pitching in 10.1 innings with an ERA + of 90. He was then DFA’d and claimed by the Blue Jays. His Toronto career ended after just 6.1 innings, as he was released after a disastrous outing (his ERA for those 6.1 innings was nearly 10). The Mariners then brought him back to the organization (something I thought would be a decent idea after the Tigers let him go) and assigned him to Tacoma. Monday was his 2012 Tacoma debut.
He was throwing his usual sinker with not very impressive velocity (he usually sits at about 88 MPH).
Against Jermaine Mitchell:
Pauley threw a fastball down the middle that Mitchell fouled off
A slider down and in was ball 1
A fastball caught a lot of the plate but had some slight tail to the outside corner from the lefty hitter for a foul
A slider down and in (exactly like the first slider) was swung through for a K by Mitchell
Against Colin Cowgill:
After a slider down for a ball,
a fastball caught outside corner
a fastball down in the dirt was ball 2
a fastball on the bottom of the zone was hit for a ground-ball (it turned into a infield single with speed)
Against Eric Sogard:
A low sinker in the dirt for a swing and miss was followed by a
slider that stayed up was fouled off.
A slider down and in just like the Mitchell strikeout got him a whiff to end the at-bat
His outing ended when a fastball down the middle to Grant Green was turned into a ground-ball. It was hit harder hit than the first one but was turned into an out.
Overall, he got grounders with his fastball/sinker and was missing bats with a decent slider. It isn’t a hard sharp break, and he doesn’t have a history of missing bats, so it is hard to get too excited.
